How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. List each graded item and its score. One row per assignment, category or module – “Midterm, 81” – using the percentage you earned. Grading in points? Convert first: 41 out of 50 = 82%. Mixing levels is fine (one row per category, or one per assignment) as long as each row’s weight matches what it represents.
  2. Enter each item’s weight – in whatever unit your course uses. Syllabus says “Midterm – 30%”? Enter 30. University module worth 20 credits? Enter 20. The calculator divides by the sum of weights, so percentages, credits and points all work – only the ratio between weights matters.

Weighted Grade Formula – How a Weighted Average of Grades Is Calculated

One formula covers every case on this page – syllabus categories, assignment lists and university modules alike:

Weighted Grade = Σ ( grade × weight ) ÷ Σ ( weights )

Read it as: multiply every grade by its weight, add those products, then divide by the total of the weights. The division is what makes the formula self-correcting – weights totaling 100, 80 or 40 all produce a valid average.

Weighted average = 8,410 ÷ 100 = 84.1% – a B. Compare that with the simple average of the same four scores: (74 + 81 + 92 + 88) ÷ 4 = 83.75%. The weighted result is higher because the strong 92% carries more weight (25) than the weak 74% essay (20). That gap grows as weights diverge – which is exactly why “just averaging your grades” misleads you in any weighted course.

At university, weights usually arrive as credits rather than percentages – and the same formula handles them untouched. Enter each module’s mark as the grade and its credit value as the weight:

Weighted average = 2,720 ÷ 40 = 68.0%. Note what the credit weighting did: the simple average of 68, 74 and 62 is 68.0% too in this case – but shift the strong 74% mark onto the 20-credit module and the weighted average climbs to 69.5% while the simple average stays put at 68%. Double-credit modules are double-stakes modules; protect them first. Know the Difference

Weighted vs Unweighted Average – and Why Weighted Grade ≠ Weighted GPA

  • Unweighted average: every grade counts equally – add and divide by the count. It’s what this calculator computes when you leave all weights blank or equal, and it’s only correct when your course genuinely treats all work equally.
  • Weighted average: grades count in proportion to their weight. A 30-weight midterm moves the result three times as far as a 10-weight quiz. Any time your syllabus lists category percentages – or your degree lists module credits – this is the correct math.
  • Weighted GPA is a different animal: it averages across courses on the 4.0 scale and adds difficulty bonuses (+0.5 Honors, +1.0 AP/IB). If you searched “weighted grade calculator” looking for AP and Honors GPA boosts, you want the high school GPA calculator – this page weights scores within a course, not courses within a transcript.
Rule of thumb for study hours: a point of improvement is worth its weight – literally. Raising your midterm average (weight 30) by 5 points adds 1.5 to your overall grade; the same 5 points on a 10-weight quiz category adds 0.5.
