How to Use the SGPA to CGPA Conversion Calculator
Five steps, about two minutes. Step one is where accuracy is won or lost, because the credits figure is the input most students never think to collect.
- Collect your SGPA and total credits for every semester. Both are printed on each semester grade card. Credits means the total credits registered that term – not the number of subjects, and not the credits you passed if you carried a backlog. Getting this wrong is the single most common source of a mismatched CGPA.
- Add one row per completed semester. Use Add semester until every term has a row. Enter the SGPA exactly as printed, including both decimals – rounding 7.86 to 7.9 before the calculation shifts your final CGPA in a way that will not reconcile with your transcript.
- Cross-check the total credits shown in the result panel against your consolidated marksheet. If the two don’t match, a semester is missing or a credit figure is mistyped, and the CGPA will be wrong by however much that gap represents.
- Read your credit-weighted CGPA, and the comparison beneath it. The panel also reports what the simple-average shortcut would have given and by how much it differs. If that gap is large, your credit loads vary significantly between semesters – which is exactly when the shortcut fails.
- Switch to the Target tab to plan the rest of your degree. Enter your CGPA so far, credits completed, the CGPA you need and the credits remaining. The calculator returns the SGPA required, and says plainly when a target sits above a perfect 10 and is no longer reachable.
What Is SGPA and CGPA? The Difference in Plain Terms
SGPA is your Semester Grade Point Average – the credit-weighted average of your grade points for one semester. CGPA is your Cumulative Grade Point Average – the same calculation stretched across every semester you have completed.

The relationship is worth internalising: a single brilliant semester lifts your SGPA to its ceiling but barely moves a CGPA built on five previous terms. That is not unfairness – it is the same credit weighting working in both directions, and it is why raising a cumulative average gets harder the further into a programme you are.

Search this topic and you will mostly be told to add your SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters. That formula is a special case, not the rule, and it quietly produces a wrong answer for a large share of students.

How Far Wrong Can the Shortcut Be?
Take a student with a light, high-scoring semester and a heavy, difficult one – an entirely ordinary pattern:

Example 2 — When Every Semester Carries the Same Credits
Four semesters at 20 credits each, with SGPAs of 8.0, 7.5, 8.5 and 9.0:
- Credit-weighted: (160 + 150 + 170 + 180) ÷ 80 = 660 ÷ 80 = 8.25
- Simple average: (8.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 9.0) ÷ 4 = 8.25
- Identical – because equal weights make the weighting irrelevant
This is the case the shortcut was designed for, and it is why the wrong formula survives: it gives the right answer often enough that nobody questions it.
Example 3 — Two Semesters, Same SGPAs, Different Credits
The clearest demonstration that credits change the answer. Both students scored 8.0 and 9.0:

Same two SGPAs, a 0.30 difference in real CGPA, and the simple average reports both students as identical. Student B earned their better grades in the term that counted for more – and only the weighted formula records that.
What SGPA Do I Need Next Semester to Reach My Target CGPA?
This is the question most students are really asking, and it is the same formula rearranged:

Worked Example
You hold a 7.60 CGPA across 110 credits and want 8.00 by the end of a 22-credit final semester:
- Credit points so far: 7.60 × 110 = 836
- Total credits after the term: 110 + 22 = 132
- Credit points needed in total: 8.00 × 132 = 1056
- The final semester must supply: 1056 − 836 = 220
- Required SGPA: 220 ÷ 22 = 10.00
How Backlogs, Repeats and Failed Subjects Affect Your CGPA
Standard calculators assume a clean transcript. Real ones rarely are, and these are the situations that make a calculated CGPA disagree with the official figure.
- A failed subject usually counts as zero grade points but still carries its credits. That is what makes an F so damaging – it adds to the denominator while contributing nothing to the numerator. A 4-credit failure in a 22-credit semester drags that SGPA down by roughly 1.5 points on its own.
- Cleared backlogs are handled differently by different universities. Some replace the original grade entirely, some record the reattempt with a capped grade point, and some keep both on the transcript while counting only the pass. Each rule produces a different CGPA, so check your academic regulations before assuming.
- The re-examination result may land in a later semester. If a first-semester backlog is cleared during the third, some universities revise the original SGPA while others fold it into the current term. This alone explains a large share of the mismatches students find.
- Audit and non-credit courses stay out of the calculation entirely. They appear on the marksheet without contributing credits, and including them inflates your denominator and lowers your CGPA.
- Withdrawn subjects usually carry no credits, but a withdrawal after the deadline may be recorded as a failure. The distinction is worth confirming, because the two are treated very differently.

Five Mistakes That Give You the Wrong CGPA
- Averaging SGPAs when credit loads differ. The headline error, and the one most published formulas encourage. It is only harmless when every semester carries identical credits – verify that before relying on it.
- Counting subjects instead of credits. Six subjects is not six credits. The weighting is by credit hours, and a semester of six 4-credit subjects carries twice the weight of six 2-credit ones.
- Rounding each SGPA before combining them. Rounding six SGPAs to one decimal before the calculation can shift the final CGPA by several hundredths – enough to cross a placement filter set at 7.5 or 8.0. Round once, at the end.
- Using credits passed rather than credits registered. If you failed a subject, its credits usually still count in the denominator. Dropping them inflates your CGPA and guarantees a mismatch with your transcript.
- Mixing scales. A 4-point SGPA cannot be averaged with a 10-point one. Convert everything to a single scale before combining, and state which scale your final figure uses.
